Who was Neils Bohr?

Bohr was a Danish physicist who made significant contributions to understanding atoms and he received the Nobel Prize in 1922. Essentially, he helped discover the structure of a single atom -- where the electrons, neutrons and protons are -- as well as the radiation that emanates from some atoms. Bohr has been described as one of the most influential physicists of the 20th century. His son also went on to earn a Nobel prize for physics work in 1975.

Although complex, this image indicates the relative positions of electrons hovering around an atom.
This model was one of his most significant contributions to physics.
